Flower Power: Passiflora

It would take effort to not love a passionflower. I mean, look at them! The flowers are interesting and abundant. The foliage is full and evergreen. Bonus, if it's a fruiting variety, it's edible!

In Seattle they are only marginally hardy but that doesn't stop mine. The Aphrodite's Purple Nightie on my front stoop railing has been in bloom since mid-May and is still going strong in September. I recommend planting in a protected spot and mulch heavily in the winter months. They can take light shade but prefer a sunny spot. Give them something they can climb such as a trellis, chain link fence, or railing. My last recommendation is to plant somewhere close to a pathway or area you frequent. All the details in each bloom are what make this stunner a knockout so you'll want to be able to see them up close to fully enjoy!
